Yellog—Replacing legacy systems in a big corporation
In close collaboration with the development team of Schachermayer, we gradually replaced the centerpiece of the company – the storage and logistics system. Along with it, we replaced the shipping software solution and upgraded the barcode scanner.
The new application, Yellog, takes over the functions of the old systems and extends them to meet all the logistics requirements: everything from shipping and packaging to goods acceptance, inventory management, and much more.

The Challenge
Introducing new technologies without impairing productivity
A company like Schachermayer GmbH has evolved into a major corporation over the years. Such growth also means a simultaneous expansion of the IT systems.
The result is aging and insecure IT systems, whose maintenance and further development become an enormous burden. In addition, there are problems like expensive licenses and outdated technologies.
The challenge was to introduce newer technologies in a large company without interfering with ongoing daily operations. Therefore, a big-bang introduction was out of the question for a project of this size. Another complicating factor was that the functionality of the legacy systems was sometimes not well documented.
The project therefore required not only the new technical implementation, but also a restructuring of entire business processes.

The Solution
A complete application that doesn’t become obsolete
The idea was to create a smooth, state-of-the-art solution that worked effectively in two ways: first, by meeting the requirements of today’s technology, and second, by having the possibility to expand it at any time (thus offering independence and security).
The core of our solution is a new backend web server that makes it possible to carry out updates directly on the server, always remaining up to date with the latest business processes & technology. This removes the need to manually distribute and deploy updates to all devices in the warehouse. This also works for the barcode scanners (a mix of Microsoft & Android devices) where we developed a custom framework that is in use in multiple projects at Schachermayer GmbH.
This core interfaces with a multitude of renewed web front ends for applications throughout the logistics process, individually customized to the different use cases, as well as with various existing systems and processes.

Schachermayer GmbH provided a team that develops and maintains the PL/SQL interfaces to the existing systems, the database development, and the internal requirements engineering. Schachermayer GmbH also provided team members to support the Yellog team at Cloudflight and to keep communication channels short and free of red tape.
